Java / Database Developer

The Institute for Health Metrics (IHM) is a unique, mission-driven collaboration between leading hospitals and researchers to study patterns of medical care, medical practice protocols, and ways to improve the safety and effectiveness of care using health data and information technologies.
IHM seeks a Java/Database Developer with broad programming experience to build its next generation of ASP clinical data products. Reporting to the CTO, the Java/Database Developer will work alongside the current members of the Engineering, Quality & Operations Group as a peer and contributing team member. The successful candidate will be a focused, motivated professional, willing to learn new technologies and comfortable both in small groups and as an individual contributor.
The successful candidate must have deep practical experience using the following technologies:
- Must be a great Java generalist
- Must work well in a small, flat, Agile team
- Must be fluent in all the right Java technologies: Spring, Hibernate, J2EE, JUnit, Groovy/Grails, Tomcat and other application servers, and so on
- Must have a good understanding of database design, query writing, query performance tuning, and experience dealing with large data sets
- Must have hands-on experience with at least one of Oracle or PostgreSQL, including query optimization and stored procedures
- Must have used all the right tools and mastered several of them: eclipse, Java generics, standard Java libraries, Subversion, Ant, Maven, unit test code coverage
Additionally, the successful candidate may bring the following skills:
- Hosted applications or web sites
- Comfortable in XML technologies including XSLT
- Basic Linux server administration fundamentals and standards
- Experience with post-relational databases
OTHER REQUIREMENTS:
- B.S. degree or equivalent
- At least five years of professional experience
- Ability to work independently as well as a key team member
- Excellent verbal and other communication skills
- Strong outcome-based work ethic alongside a strong sense of humor
- An abiding interest in pursuing a purpose to do well by doing good
